About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes aim to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability, and help them to reach their potential and foster a love of learning. Through individualised programmes with work set at just the right level, your child will be able to build strong learning foundations, not only developing ability in maths and English but transferable skills that will help them achieve across all subjects.

Children learn through example questions in our worksheets along with Instructor guidance. This method of learning offers so much more than traditional tuition: it nurtures your child’s independence, developing strong self-learning skills to give them the tools to help them excel in the future. Because Kumon does not follow the school curriculum and work is set according to ability, irrespective of age, our programmes allow learners both to fill in any missing gaps in their study foundations as well as the opportunity to work ahead of their school grade level. Your local Instructor will assess your child to determine at what point in the programme they should begin their Kumon study, then through daily work coupled with up to twice weekly study centre visits, they will build both self-confidence and crucial skills in small manageable steps.

About your Instructor

My name is Niamh Herron and I opened the Clontarf Study Centre in December 2011.
I became interested in running a Kumon centre when I saw first-hand its benefits after my own children started studying Kumon. I was very impressed with the power and flexibility of the Kumon programmes and believe that every child, regardless of their age or ability, can advance their literacy and numeracy skills. It is just a matter of getting the right practice in place and working at the correct pace.

It is incredibly fulfilling to see some students change from being those who try to avoid what may be their weaker subject to those who love that subject and enjoy the feeling of being good at it.

I know that family life can be hectic at times, so it is fantastic to see the commitment given by my Kumon families to adhere to the daily study, marking and corrections and for them to realise the benefits gained by this discipline.

I have always had a passion for learning and love to see children do well not only academically but also in personality, through encouragement and support.

Being a Kumon Instructor affords me the privilege of working with children and with parents who are totally committed to improving their child's educational experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.
